Councillor claims Oshawa council rejected ‘Buy Local’ motion

John Neal

A regional and Oshawa councillor told Durham Post that his motion to buy locally was rejected by Oshawa Council.

Municipalities across Durham, including the Regional Municipality of Durham, are now promoting the concept of buying Canadian after the U.S. launched a tariff war on Canada.

“I tried at the 2026 budget in Oshawa with a motion to purchase locally, in Ontario or Canadian, and it was ruled out of order,” said Councillor John Neal.

” I even challenged the ruling as I believed, as well as my constituents, that it was important, so I don’t understand all a sudden [why] the City of Oshawa thinks this should be policy now.

Same With Region of Durham

“I do not believe that the City of Oshawa or the Region of Durham are doing their best to buy local, Ontario or Canadian. Talk but not much action,” he said (see below).

The councillor pointed out that at the Region HQ, “the situation is the same, as I have questioned whether items purchased by the region overall, are being purchased locally, in Ontario or are Canadian manufactured”.

Neal pointed out that the Region of Durham is in the process of doing a Core Services Review.

“The top priority should be to purchase locally, in Ontario or Canadian including any consultant companies,” said Neal.

“I would ask that the Durham Regional Core Service Review include that recommendation in their mandate and pass that information on to the area municipalities and school boards.

“There is a lot of talk about buying Canadian; however I don’t see any action,” the councillor added.
