In a heartfelt effort to give back to those who have supported him during his caregiving journey, Bill Willis, a dedicated caregiver to his wife Lynne, raised more than $7,000 for the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region (ASDR) at his second annual Willis Family Fundraiser.
These funds will directly support local programs to assist individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.
Bill’s caregiving role began more than a decade ago when Lynne was diagnosed with dementia. According to ASDR, their life together, which included travel, theater, summers at the lake, and social evenings with family and friends, changed after Lynne’s diagnosis.
ASDR explained that as the disease progressed, Bill sought support and connected with the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region in 2021. They stated that he accessed services such as the Men’s Breakfast Group, a peer-led support group for male caregivers. ASDR representatives noted that members of the group share experiences and advice, helping one another manage caregiving challenges.
According to ASDR, Bill’s involvement in the group and his role as a member of the ASDR Client Advisory Committee led him to give back to the organization.
Bill Willis stated, “My father said, ‘Every step you take forward, you need to extend a hand behind you,’ and that’s the lifestyle I have chosen to live. Don’t look for the reason, look for your own meaning in it, and for me, I think that meaning is doing what I can to help.”
ASDR officials confirmed that Bill has been raising funds for the organization. They reported that, including this year’s event, he has raised more than $23,000 to support ASDR. According to event organizers, the Willis Family Fundraiser brings together friends, family, and colleagues to raise funds in honor of Lynne and to support the community. ASDR stated that Bill relies on businesses for the venue, auction prizes, and entertainment.
How You Can Get Involved
ASDR representatives stated that Bill’s fundraising demonstrates how individuals can support their communities. They explained that these fundraisers benefit families of those living with dementia. Funds raised allow the organization to provide services such as support groups, counseling, respite, recreation programs, and education.
Kendel Ferrara, Director of Development at ASDR, stated, “We are incredibly grateful to Bill for all the support he has shown us over the years. His annual fundraiser is a wonderful example of how individuals and the community can come together to make a difference.”
She added, “As we’ve seen with Bill, these fundraisers can have an impact. Each event helps raise awareness and provides essential resources to support a cause that touches so many lives in our community.”
ASDR representatives encouraged residents to host their own fundraisers. They stated that activities could include craft or bake sales, sports games, auctions, dress-down days at work, trivia nights, and more. ASDR noted that they provide tools and guidance for those interested in organizing an event.
