Now that Ford is in, will 407E toll go, Bowmanville train come?

Ontario Premier Doug Ford had promised (see below) during his election campaign to withdraw the only remaining provincial toll on a 400-series highway – on the Ontario owned part of 407 East.

In his party’s election manifesto, Premier Ford had promised to move the ‘GO train to Bowmanville’ project forward.

It is still early in his government’s new term, but the question is: Will the political promises be honoured, and if yes, by when?

407E toll Linked to U.S. Tariffs

Timing is especially crucial in the case of the removal of 407 East toll which was linked to an overall plan to face the challenges of U.S. tariffs on Canada, which were scheduled to come into effect today (March 4).

“With President Trump continuing to threaten tariffs that would skyrocket costs for hard-working families, it’s never been more important to protect people’s wallets by putting more money back into their pockets,” said Doug Ford during a visit to Durham in early February (see below).

“Our PC team will save Ontario drivers thousands of dollars every year by axing tolls on Highway 407 East and making our cut to the gas tax permanent. We’ll protect Ontario drivers by banning congestion charges just like we banned road tolls,” Ford had promised.

Bowmanville GO Train

The PC Party website has a section on ‘Fighting Gridlock to Protect Ontario’s Economy’ wherein it is stated that part of the province’s future transit plan includes “extending GO train services to Bowmanville in Durham Region”.
