Ford promises removal of 407 East toll, permanent gas tax cut

Ontario Premier and PC leader Doug Ford stated that a re-elected Ontario PC government will remove tolls from Highway 407 East.

There have been continuing calls to withdraw the Highway 407 East toll from both users and municipalities in Durham, host to the only government tolled road in Ontario (see below).

Ford, who was visiting Pickering and Oshawa in Durham yesterday, also promised that a re-elected PC government will make its gas tax cut permanent, as well as introduce legislation to ban congestion charges on Ontario roads and highways. He was joined by Pickering Mayor Kevin Ashe, Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster, and Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter, who endorsed Ford.

“With President Trump continuing to threaten tariffs that would skyrocket costs for hard-working families, it’s never been more important to protect people’s wallets by putting more money back into their pockets,” said Doug Ford. “Our PC team will save Ontario drivers thousands of dollars every year by axing tolls on Highway 407 East and making our cut to the gas tax permanent. We’ll protect Ontario drivers by banning congestion charges just like we banned road tolls.”

In response to U.S. tariff threats, the Ontario PC will reduce government fees and taxes on drivers to keep costs down, according to Ford. The plan includes:

  • Taking tolls off Highway 407 East, which runs between Brock Road in Pickering and Highway 115 in Clarington, saving daily commuters $7,200 every year.
  • Permanently cutting the provincial tax on gas by 5.7 cents per litre and on diesel by 5.3 cents, for total savings of 10.7 cents per litre of gas when combined with the PCs’ cancellation of the Liberal cap-and-trade carbon tax.
  • Legislation to ban use of congestion pricing on all provincial and municipal roadways, building on previous legislation that banned new tolls on provincial highways.
