Cloca warns of hazardous creek conditions

Oshawa-based Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (Cloca) has warned of Hazardous Creek Conditions in Durham.

It said that Environment Canada forecast 5-10 mm of rain yesterday morning, as well as another 5-10 mm of rain to fall Thursday night. While this is not a significant amount of rain, unseasonably warm temperatures are expected to continue into the week which will result in increased snowmelt.

The forecast rainfall combined with saturated soils, warm temperatures, and associated snowmelt, could result in increased runoff causing higher than normal water levels and flows in our streams, especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges.  No flooding is anticipated but will be monitored, Cloca said in a media release.

The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is asking all residents and children to stay away from all watercourses and structures such as bridges, culverts and dams.  Elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along stream banks continue to make these locations extremely dangerous.  Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses and ponds.

This Water Safety Statement will be in effect through Friday March 13, 2020, or until further notice, it added.
