Councillor slams ‘finger-pointing’ at Oshawa budget meet

Brian Nicholson

The councillor who said Oshawa was trying to confuse taxpayers over the proposed 2026 tax levy increase, yesterday spoke up about ‘finger-pointing’ at the city budget meeting.

“Today [November 14], city council is supposed to be meeting to hear from area residents on the proposed Oshawa budget and potential 4.68 per cent tax hike,” said Brian Nicholson, Councillor for city Ward 5 and at Durham Council.

“Instead we are subjected to self-serving, politically motivated questions and finger pointing, often regarding issues not in the budget and not in Oshawa jurisdiction,” he pointed out.

Halfway through the meeting, he wrote on social media that: “I am very disappointed so far…

“I wish to state that it is time that my colleagues listen to the residents and save the political speeches until next year,” he said.

  1. Oshawa property taxes are among the highest, and where are the revenues going towards? What has been done to truly help the seniors? What about fixing all the crumbling roads that need to be fixed? Oshawa downtown is awful, no one wants to do business there. It needs to be bulldozed and recreated, a total makeover. It is one of the armpits of Ontario. Another tax hike would be truly ridiculous, and uncalled for. Taxes keep increasing but nothing of significance or necessity gets done. Thanks Dan Carter, for nothing. Just remember where you came from, so don’t abuse the power you have been given by the people who voted you. It is a privilege, not a right, where you are now. Otherwise you may end up back from where you started.
