Crashes cause traffic chaos, property damage

Two separate vehicle collisions over the weekend caused significant property damage, resulting in intersections being closed for several hours, said a Durham Police media release yesterday.

On Friday, November 15  at approximately 6 pm, officers were called to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Bloor Street West and Thornton Road South in Oshawa. A Mercedes SUV was travelling eastbound through the intersection on a green light when it was struck by a taxi turning southbound in the intersection. The SUV then crashed into a traffic light post, causing it to lean on other hydro wires.

Both vehicles were severely damaged and the driver of the taxi sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries. The intersection was closed for about five hours to conduct the investigation and repair the damages caused. This investigation is ongoing.

On Sunday, November 17 at 2:30 am., officers were called to a single-vehicle collision at Taunton Road East and Brock Street North in Whitby. A 42-year-old Clarington man was driving southbound in a Jeep when he attempted to turn westbound onto Taunton Road. While in the turn, the vehicle mounted the curb, struck a tree, hit a cable box and then a fire hydrant, causing significant damage to both the property and the vehicle. The intersection was closed for several hours to make repairs. No injuries were reported.

Hetal Thakar, age 42, of Scottsdale Drive in Clarington was charged with: Impaired Operation; and Exceed 80 mg. He was later released on a Promise to Appear and the vehicle was impounded for a week.
