Do not call the pop-up helpline on your screen

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has advised residents to be wary of pop-up telephone numbers on their computer screen, even if they claim to be helplines to solve issues.

DRPS yesterday issued a fraud alert saying: “We have seen an increase in tech support scams.”

If you receive a pop-up screen on your computer advising you have a virus, do not call the number on the screen or click on any links, it said.

Online scammers are posing as tech support to access personal information and money, DRPS added.
