Doctors, army staff at Orchard Villa to contain outbreak

Lakeridge Health yesterday said doctors are onsite at Orchard Villa long term care home to contain the Covid-19 outbreak, which has so far claimed 31 lives.

On April 22, at the request of Durham Region Medical Officer of Health, Lakeridge Health took a leadership role in managing the Covid-19 outbreak at Orchard Villa in support of its partners at Southbridge Care.

“Physicians are coming onsite to support the care for a number of residents…Additional supports are being provided by the Canadian Forces,” said a Lakeridge statement issued yesterday.

“In addition, Lakeridge Health has a number of additional Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, Personal Support Workers, and Dietary professionals who are transitioning to work at the home…through the weekend,” it added.

Expert clinical, infection prevention and control and medical teams from Lakeridge Health are assessing the situation at the home and starting action plans to limit further infection transmission and enhance resident and staff safety.

Families updated

Working with the onsite care team, patient experience officers have begun reaching out to family members to share information about residents’ state and the work Lakeridge Health is doing to support them. Lakeridge Health’s patient experience teams will be updating families frequently and further updates will be provided publicly as information is available, said the statement.

The Lakeridge Health response is led by Leslie Motz, Vice-President Patient Services, and Chief Nursing Executive. Leslie.

“Lakeridge Health’s teams are now onsite to support Orchard Villa residents and staff. The entire team is focused on providing the best possible care,” said Susan deRyk, Interim President and CEO, Lakeridge Health. “Lakeridge Health takes this responsibility seriously and will continue to act in the best interest of Orchard Villa’s residents, and the community as a whole as we continue the fight against this virus.”

“Our primary focus at Orchard Villa is to ensure we can provide the care our residents need as we work through the unprecedented challenge of Covid-19,” said Ryan Bell, CEO Southbridge Care. “Orchard Villa has been actively working with our local health care partners and asking for assistance in combating the outbreak in our home. The Ontario government has informed us that they will be sending additional supports to our operations. We welcome their help.”
