Driver becomes ill, dies after crashing into pole

A 70-year-old man has died after a single-vehicle collision in Whitby.

On March 9, at about 11 pm, members from Central West Division were called to Victoria Street East and Brock Street South for single-vehicle involving a male driver.

The male had driven his vehicle onto the curb shoulder of the roadway, and struck a hydro pole, after suffering a medical episode, police said.

He was non-responsive at the scene, and transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased, they added.

Members of the DRPS Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene to conduct an investigation. The roads in the area were closed for several hours while evidence was collected.
