Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster yesterday said he has been informed that the school board is investigating the destruction of Quran at a local school, and that appropriate action will be taken.
“I understand that the incident is being taken exceptionally seriously and investigated by the school board, which will take the appropriate next steps,” Mayor Foster said in a statement.
He said he was “saddened and deeply disappointed by an incident of intolerance” which involved a copy of the Quran, the Islamic sacred book, being deliberately destroyed at a local school.
“I want to state clearly that religious and racial intolerance has no place in Clarington. I want to reassure our Muslim community and all our residents that Clarington values equity, diversity, and inclusiveness in our community,” he said.
“It is a source of strength that we are a safe and welcoming place for all,” Mayor Foster added.
A Hold and Secure was reported by parents at a Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board (KPRDSB) school in Bowmanville a couple of days ago. The two incidents are not related.
No further information was released till late last night.
