The Regional Municipality of Durham yesterday said it is seeking federal approval to replace two aging bridges in Uxbridge and Scugog townships.
The Laurie Bridge on Durham Regional Road 13 (Zephyr Road) and the Saintfield Bridge on Durham Regional Road 6 (Saintfield Road) are both slated for replacement, subject to approval under the Canadian Navigable Waters Act.
Replacement of the Laurie Bridge, which carries Zephyr Road (Regional Road 13) over Pefferlaw River, 0.85 km west of Concession Road 6 in the Township of Uxbridge, is currently in the detailed design stage.. The existing bridge will be replaced with a new structure.
The bridge is anticipated to be replaced in a single construction season, with full closure of Zephyr Road (Regional Road 13) at the bridge location during construction.
The Region of Durham is currently designing the replacement of the Saintfield bridge, which carries Saintfield road (Regional Road 6) over Layton River, about 3.9 kilometres east of Highway 12 in the Township of Scugog.
Weight Limit Restriction is required at the bridge, two (2) load restriction signs were installed in March 2023. The maximum loads restriction posted for 3 levels: 20 Tonnes, 37 Tonnes, 52 Tonnes.
Saintfield road at the bridge location will be closed for the bridge replacement. The construction is planned to be carried out in 2025 between month of July and November.
The project is currently in the detail design stage.
The proposed replacements aim to improve safety and reliability for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. Detailed plans for the projects, including potential impacts on marine navigation, are available for public review on the Canadian Navigable Waters Registry (http://cps.canada.ca) under file numbers NPP 2024-413079 (Laurie Bridge) and NPP 2024-413339 (Saintfield Bridge).
