Festive RIDE: 58 impaired charged against 43 last year

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) completed its fifth week of the Festive RIDE program, stopping more than 1,587 vehicles and charging 11 drivers with impaired driving offences.

After the fifth week, the Festive RIDE team has charged a total of 58 motorists with impaired driving offences. Last year at the same time, 43 had been charged, said a DRPS statement.

Another 12 motorists have registered a WARN on a roadside screening device and had their driver’s licence suspended for three days. Last year at the same time, four driver’s had their licence suspended for registering a WARN.

Durham Regional Officers conducted RIDE checks in Ajax, Clarington, Pickering, Whitby and Oshawa with the following totals (the numbers in brackets reflect 2020 third week totals for comparison):

  • 1587 (1550) Vehicles stopped by RIDE.
  • 46 (44) People given Roadside Breath Tests
  • 7 (4) People received “3 Day Suspensions” for registering a “WARN”
  • 5 (0) Novice Driver received a 3, 7 or 30 Licence Suspension
  • 11 (7) People were charged with Drinking and Driving Offences
  • 2 (18) Criminal Code Charges
  • 56 (79) Charged with various Highway Traffic Act offences
  • 1 (0) Drug Offences

A complete list of those charged with Impaired/Exceed will be posted on DRPS website later this week under Hot Topics.

Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, anyone charged with a drinking and driving criminal offence will have his or her driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded automatically for seven days.

  1. Kudos to the RIDE team . It is heartbreaking to see these numbers ,particularly in light of the court case going on in the news as we speak. A mother and three children killed due to a young driver impaired by drugs.
