Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) yesterday released further details in relation to Monday’s Highway 401 multi-vehicle crash in Whitby.
A wrong-way police chase of a Clarington robbery suspect cargo van cost the lives of four people, including an infant, and serious injuries to two people.
The SIU said an Indian couple from Ajax lost their baby son and its grandparents who were visiting from India, in the crash. The wife suffered serious injuries.
The driver of the van that was being pursued by police, also died, while its passenger is in hospital with serious injuries.
All post-mortems took place on Wednesday in Toronto, SIU said.
It said as of yesterday:
– From the Nissan Sentra involved in the collision:
- A 60-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman – both visiting from India – were killed in the collision.
- Their three-month-old grandson was also pronounced deceased at the scene.
- In this same vehicle were the parents of the infant – the 33-year-old father and 27-year-old mother. The parents, residents of Ajax, were both taken to hospital for treatment. The mother was treated for serious injuries that she suffered.
– From the cargo van initially being investigated by police and involved in the collision:
- The 21-year-old male driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.
- The 38-year-old male passenger was transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
SIU has allocated substantial resources for the investigation, with two subject officials and four witness officials have been designated. Also, seven investigators, one forensic investigator and one collision reconstructionist, continue to investigate this case.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
