Works on parts of the lands cleared for the Bowmanville Hospital extension has begun with the mobilization of crews on the southeast side of the facility.
Previously KFC and Pizza hit had stood at the location along King Street in Bowmanville, in the Municipality of Clarington.
It is understood a new parking lot will come up at the site allowing the hospital room to expand over the existing parking lot.
Site works started following the closure of the Request for Proposals process in June.

The design and build team was expected to be announced this fall. The historic Lambert House has been relocated to make way for the new hospital, and land has recently been acquired to support hospital parking capacity said an earlier Bowmanville Hospital Foundation statement. Founded in 1976, the foundation is marking its 50th anniversary this year.
Will Double Capacity
Redeveloping the Bowmanville Hospital will double the hospital’s capacity by adding 32 new beds and building new state-of-the-art facilities to expand inpatient and ambulatory care services and the emergency department.
As of August 2024, the Ontario government had provided more than $12 million in capital planning grants to support Lakeridge Health’s master redevelopment plan.

The expansion of Lakeridge’s services and hospital campuses will add a total of 300 new hospital beds and enhance services throughout the region. The precise distribution of the 300 new beds across Lakeridge Health’s various sites will be determined as part of the ongoing planning process, which includes:
- Redeveloping the Bowmanville Hospital.
- Building a new Whitby Hospital to improve access to fast and convenient care.
- A new post-acute care centre in Pickering to connect more patients and their families to rehabilitation and recovery supports.
- Creating space for acute care capacity at the Oshawa site by relocating some services to a new post-acute care centre in Pickering.
- Later phases of the redevelopment plan under consideration include expanding the Ajax Pickering Hospital to connect more people to clinical and support services.
Lakeridge Health serves more than 700,000 residents at five hospitals and more than 20 community health centres across Durham Region.
