Police ask auto finance fraud victims to come forward

Durham police is appealing for further victims after a female was arrested in connection with an auto financing fraud scam.

On Wednesday, September 30, the suspect submitted an online application to purchase a 2027 Mercedes SUV at Mercedes-Benz dealership in Durham, using the victim’s identification.

The application included images of identification documents, including a Canadian passport that displayed the suspect’s photograph but identified the victim as the holder.

The application was approved, and financing was arranged through a financial institution.

On Thursday, October 8, 2026, the female was taken into custody without incident, when she attended the dealership to complete the transaction and take possession of the vehicle.
