Woman tried to make someone else pay for her Mercedes

Durham police yesterday said a female has been arrested in connection with an auto-financing fraud scam.

On Wednesday, September 30, the suspect submitted an online application to purchase a 2027 Mercedes SUV at Mercedes-Benz dealership in Durham, using the victim’s identification.

The application included images of identification documents, including a Canadian passport that displayed the suspect’s photograph but identified the victim as the holder.

The application was approved, and financing was arranged through a financial institution.

Victim Got To Know

Prior to the vehicle being released, the victim was notified of the purchase and reported the incident to both the Durham Regional Police Service and the dealership as a case of identity fraud.

On Thursday, October 8, the female was taken into custody without incident, when she attended the dealership to complete the transaction and take possession of the vehicle.

The suspect, age 39, of Brampton was charged and released on an undertaking. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Det. Stuart of the DRPS Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5353.

Editor’s Note: Durham Post does not name or identify the accused as:
