Flooding Alert: Up to 35mm rain forecast till Sunday

The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (Cloca)  has advised that Durham could face localized flooding on roadways, in low lying and flood prone areas.

Cloca has asked all residents to stay away from all watercourses and structures such as bridges, culverts and dams.

“Elevated water levels, fast flowing water, weak ice and slippery conditions along stream banks continue to make these locations extremely dangerous. Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses and ponds,” it warned.

The Surface Water Monitoring Centre of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is forecasting a low pressure system which was to move into the Durham watershed late last evening and continue into Sunday morning. Rainfall of up to 20 – 35 mm is expected.

The rainfall combined with warm temperatures and associated snowmelt could result in increased runoff causing higher than normal water levels and flows in streams and creeks, resulting in dangerous flow conditions especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges.

This Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook will be in effect through to Sunday December 15. Cloca will continue to monitor the conditions of the streams and creeks and will provide updates as required, it said.
