Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) yesterday said it plans to add a fourth lane from Highway 412 to Salem Road to ease the traffic bottleneck on this stretch of Highway 401.
It said construction on the additional lane could begin as early as next year, pending approval of funding and permits.
“The MTO has completed several preliminary design and environmental assessment (EA) studies for Highway 401 in the Region of Durham,” Susan Nichol, Director, MTO Design and Engineering Branch, reportedly wrote to a resident yesterday.
Durham Post reported last October (see below) that MTO was conducing studies to find both an interim and a long-term solution to the congestion on this stretch.
Yesterday, the ministry letter said: “MTO is improving Highway 401 westbound between Lake Ridge Road and Salem Road, which is intended to provide near-term congestion relief by adding a fourth continuous westbound lane on Highway 401, extending from Highway 412 on-ramp to the four-lane cross section at the Salem Road interchange.
“Construction is anticipated to begin as early as 2027, subject to funding availability and securing all necessary approvals to proceed with the work,” it said.
