Girl who saved mates buried under snow honoured

Katherine Rogers, the girl who helped save school mates accidentally buried under snow, has been honoured by the Town of Whitby.

Yesterday evening, the Town of Whitby Council recognized Katherine Rogers who showed courage on February 16, 2021, when she helped her classmates who were buried and injured by a snow plow at Julie Payette School, said a tweet from town mayor Don Mitchell.

“We are deeply grateful for your heroic actions. Well done,” he said.

On February 16, 2021, members of Central West Division were called to Julie Payette Public school on Garden Street in Whitby, after two students were injured from snow being pushed by a front-end loader snow plow. The snow clearing vehicle was working on an adjacent residential property when the injuries were sustained, said a police statement.

A 12-year-old boy, who was completely buried in the snow, sustained serious injury as a result of the incident on school grounds. Responding officers performed CPR before he was transported to a local hospital. He was later transferred to a trauma centre in Toronto.

An 11-year-old girl was partially buried in the snow, and sustained minor injuries. She was treated and released by emergency services on scene.

A Ministry of Labour inquiry was instituted.

There was no further update.
