In an update at 3:45pm Monday, the municipality said the smoke was minimal. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
“The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks is en route to the scene to evaluate the environmental conditions, including air and water quality,” it said.
The municipality extended its appreciation to “our incredible firefighters” for their swift, professional, and coordinated response to this incident.
Clarington Emergency and Fire Services were called to a fire at the former Goodyear Lands in downtown Bowmanville shortly after midnight Monday, October 13.
Clarington Fire was asking residents to stay away from the area for their safety. There was no risk to air quality at this time; however, sections of the building are unstable.
There have been previous incidents of arson, graffiti and damage at the abandoned plant, which the municipality is planning to include in its plans for redevelopment of the prime area.
