Grandparent Scam ring busted, three held

Three male suspects are facing numerous charges for their participation in a crime ring targeting seniors in Durham Region and across the GTA.

Investigators from the DRPS Financial Crimes Unit are examining more than 70 incidents of ‘Grandparent Scams’ across the region. In each case, the senior victim received a phone call from a person purporting to be a lawyer for their grandchild. The suspect would tell the victim their grandchild had been involved in a car accident injuring a pregnant female, and $9,000 was required as bail. The suspect would then arrange for a ‘bondsman’ or courier to attend the home to pick up the money. After the money was received the senior victim would receive another phone call advising the female and/or baby had died and more money would be required, explained a police statement.

Investigators have connected the three suspects to several incidents in Durham Region dating back to September of 2021.

One is from North York, another from Newmarket, and the third from Scarborough. Names, charges and photographs are available at www.drps.ca.

Investigators want to ensure there are no further victims.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact D/Cst. Middleton of the DRPS – Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5321.

DRPS would like to remind residents who receive any unanticipated requests for money to be extremely cautious and speak to a family member or trusted advisor for support.
