Baseball bat group assault at high school sends youth to hospital

Durham Police yesterday said a youth is recovering after being assaulted at a high school in Whitby.

On Thursday, March 21 at about 12:20 pm, members from Central West Division responded to an unknown trouble call at Father Leo Austin Catholic School located at 1020 Dryden Blvd in Whitby.

Officers arrived on scene and located a youth suffering from a head injury. He was transported to a local-area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

An on-scene investigation revealed that the victim was struck in the head with a baseball bat by a group of five to six males who left the area in a vehicle. Investigators believe this to be a targeted attack and there is no risk to public safety.

Anyone with video footage, dash cam footage or information about this incident is asked to contact D/Cst. Giguere of the Central West Division Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1852.
