The penalty for possessing a road radar detector is…

It is very often that stalwarts of the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) come across banned products and substances in their routine daily traffic inspections.

The most common items range from guns and drugs to alcohol and cash. But sometimes – like on Wednesday – officers come across techological products such as roadside radar detectors.

“Radar detectors are illegal to possess in a vehicle or use in Ontario as this driver just found out,” said officers from DRPS Central East Division.

The fine is $170 and adds three demerit points to the motorist’s account.

Another bus-stop violation on same road

Meanwhile, DRPS East Division officers yesterday stopped two vehicles on Highway 2 at Holt Road for failing to stop for a school bus.

The bus had its stop arm out and lights were flashing as children were boarding the bus.

“Vehicles must stop in all directions, unless there is a physical barrier dividing lanes,” police said adding that the fine for this violation is $490 and six demerit points.

On Tuesday, officers stopped three vehicles in the same area for the same offence (see traffic story below).

DRPS Traffic Services urged Durham residents to join in in keeping the roads safe.

“We will always work towards safer roads. We ask you do your part. Drive safe. Drive sober. We are in this together,” it said.
