Durham police yesterday said a male is facing several charges after he intentionally struck a pedestrian with his vehicle in Oshawa. The victim is in critical condition.
A black Volkswagen sedan travelling northbound on Nonquon Road left its lane and accelerated into the oncoming traffic lane, striking a 36-year-old male pedestrian. The Volkswagen fled the area and failed to remain at the scene, police said.
They said the incident took place on Thursday, August 6 at about 10:30 am, when members of Central East Division responded to a collision involving a pedestrian in the area of Nonquon Road and Mary Street North.
Officers and Emergency Medical Services attended the scene and located the victim suffering from critical life-threatening injuries. The victim was transported to a local-area hospital before being flown via Air Ornge to a Toronto-area trauma centre where he remains in critical condition.
Members of the Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene to conduct their investigation and later located the suspect vehicle parked unoccupied a short distance away.
Swat Team Helps Arrest
On Friday, August 7 at about 12:40 am, members of the Central East Division Criminal Investigations Branch, with the assistance of the Tactical Support Unit, executed a search warrant at a residence in Oshawa.
The suspect driver was located inside the residence and taken into custody without incident.
At this time, this appears to be an isolated incident as both the accused and victim are known to each other.
The suspect, age 28 from Oshawa, was charged and held for a bail hearing. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.
