Home owners reminded to secure residences

Durham Regional Police would like to take the time to remind home owners about securing their residences and properties to prevent crime.

Crime trends show that during the spring and summer months, there has been an increase in break-and-enters, attempt break-and-enters, as well as other property crime related offences. This is due to residents leaving their primary residences as they go to work or when absent from their homes for essential reasons.

Home owners are advised to take precautions to ensure they do not become victims of a property related crime.

Tips to prevent break-and-enters and property related crime:

1) Notify friends/family of any planned absence so your residence can be checked on.
2) Have a friend/family member remove mail or door hangers from the front of your residence regularly while you are away.
3) Check to ensure all windows and doors are secured prior to leaving.
4) If possible, have a motor vehicle visible in the driveway.
5) Utilize timers on interior and exterior lights for the evening and night hours.
6) Video surveillance and/or alarm systems can act as a deterrent and assist in solving crimes in neighbourhoods.

Home owners are reminded not to store valuables, such as jewellery, in the main bedroom as this is the most commonly targeted room in a residence during a break-and-enter.

Any suspicious activity by a person or vehicle observed in a neighbourhood can be reported to DRPS at 1-888-579-1520.
