Ignore messages offering money, rebates from council

The Town of Whitby is warning residents about scam text messages that have been circulating claiming they are from the town council.

“We have received reports of residents receiving text messages claiming to be from ‘Your city council’ and offering money and an automated rebate,” said a notice from the town.

“The Town of Whitby does not send text messages from “Your city council” offering money or automated rebates. If you receive a message like this, please ignore it and do not reply,” it added.

Another scam was reported by Ontario Energy.

The Ontario Ministry of Energy and the Ontario Energy Board do not make unsolicited phone calls. If you are concerned about suspicious calls, please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501, it said.
