It’s a regular school day in Durham, a win for families

Durham school boards have welcomed the tentative agreement reached yesterday between the provincial Ministry of Education and Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) education workers.

“We are pleased to share that a tentative agreement between CUPE, the Council of Trustees Associations and the Government of Ontario has been reached. All DDSB schools will be open to in-person learning tomorrow and operations will proceed as usual,” said Durham District School Board (DDSB).

Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board (KPRDSB) said: “We are pleased to share that the government and CUPE have reached a tentative agreement. All KPR schools will be open on Monday.”

Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) said: “As a Catholic school board, we respect the collective bargaining rights of our employee union groups and we are pleased that an agreement has been reached centrally for education workers represented by CUPE across the province.

“I am pleased to formally announce that the Crown, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), and the school board trustee associations, have reached a tentative agreement that keeps schools open so that kids can stay in class. I know this is welcome news to all students, parents, and workers alike, who now have the certainty they’ve been looking for,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education.

“This is not a win for governments or education unions, it’s a win for Ontario families who finally have peace of mind knowing their children will remain in the classroom. After two and a half years of unprecedented disruptions, nothing matters more than stability in our schools. We are pleased to have reached a deal today that will make sure kids are in class catching up on their learning.”
