The Kerrison Wetland Restoration Project within the Carruthers Creek Watershed Plan, is being undertaken by the Town of Ajax, in partnership with the Region of Durham, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA).
The project will expand marsh and swamp wetland habitat; decommission old farm ponds and associated infrastructure; restore and stabilize existing stream bank erosion; and manage invasive species. Native trees and shrubs will be planted throughout the restoration area to improve biodiversity, increase natural cover and habitat for local wildlife, and enhance the greenspace for the community, said a town announcement.
In preparation for the restoration works, TRCA completed tree removals ahead of bird nesting activity in March. Implementation of the project will commence in July 2022 and will be completed in May 2023, weather permitting.
