Stranger arrives and punches, kicks, bites officers

Three officers were assaulted and one was bitten during a traffic stop in Oshawa on Friday morning.

On June 11 at about 11:15 am, members from the Central East Community Response Team conducted a traffic stop in the area of Simcoe Street and Connaught Street. While conducting an investigation, an acquaintance to the driver arrived in a separate vehicle and began confronting the officer. The suspect assaulted the officer by punching him in the face. Other officers arrived to assist and the suspect proceeded to punch and knee the officers in the face. The suspect bit one of the officers in the arm causing injury. The suspect was eventually taken into custody. The officer sustained injuries to his arm and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, said a police statement.

Andre Rankine, age 35 of Grandview Street South in Oshawa, is charged with: Assault Peace Officer Cause Bodily Harm; Assault Peace Officer x2; Mischief Under $5,000; Obstruct Peace Officer and Have Care and Control of a Vehicle with Cannabis Readily Available. He was released on an Undertaking.
