Man seriously hurt in Whitby apartment arson

Durham police yesterday said they are investigating a suspicious apartment fire in Whitby.

During the early morning hours of Friday, September 4, members of Central West Division responded to an assist fire call on Mason Drive in Whitby for an apartment fire. With the assistance of Whitby Fire and Emergency Services, the fire was confined to an area within the building and was extinguished, said a police statement.

A 53-year-old male was located within the apartment unit suffering from serious injuries. The male was subsequently transported to a Toronto-area hospital with serious life-threatening injuries, where he remains in stable condition, police said.

The office of the Ontario Fire Marshall attended the scene and conducted an investigation and have confirmed the cause of the fire to be arson.

Investigators are looking for witnesses to come forward.
