Man steals car left running, crashes it and flees scene

A suspect was arrested after fleeing in a stolen vehicle which was also involved in a collision in north Whitby, Durham Police said yesterday.

On Thursday, January 6, at approximately 8:20 am members of East Division were dispatched to a stolen vehicle call in the area of Mearns Avenue and Concession Road 3 in Clarington. The suspect stole a Toyota Rav-4 which was left running in a residential driveway. The stolen vehicle was spotted by officers on Highway 407 exiting at Lakeridge Road. Officers attempted to stop the stolen vehicle, but the suspect failed to stop. Police discontinued pursuing the vehicle due to safety concerns, the police said.

The suspect continued driving at a high rate of speed and was involved in a collision with two other vehicles at Lake Ridge Road and Highway 7. A female occupant of a white Audi was taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure and cleared medically. The suspect fled on foot, but was arrested a short distance away.

Gurdip Singh, age 29, of Brampton, is charged with: Theft Over $5,000; Possession Over $5,000; Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance; Flight from Police and Operate a Conveyance while Prohibited.

He was held for a bail hearing.
