Extreme danger alert issued for Lake Ontario coastline

The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (Cloca) said water levels in Lake Ontario are 31 cm above average.

As of the last International Lake Ontario – St. Lawrence River Board recorded water level reading on January 3, 2022, Lake Ontario levels sit at 74.86 m, which is 31 cm above average for this time of year.

It said yesterday’s forecasted south-west winds, waves and storm surge could further elevate water levels and drive waves toward the shoreline, resulting in localized flooding of nearshore properties, low lying and flood prone areas.

“Residents are advised to avoid and/or exercise caution around all Lake Ontario shoreline areas. Elevated water levels, waves, high sustained wind gusts, freezing spray, eroded bluffs, and the potential for waves to overtop breakwalls and other shoreline structures continue to make these locations extremely dangerous. Use extra caution, stay away from any areas experiencing erosion or any areas that are flooded, and alert any children under your care of these dangers and supervise their activities,” said a Cloca statement.

This Lake Ontario Shoreline Water Safety Statement will be in effect through Thursday January 6, or until further notice, it said.
