Marking Transgender Day of Remembrance in Durham

Members of the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), led by the Services’ Equity and Inclusion Unit, will be marking the Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20 with a Flag Raising ceremony.

Greetings will come from PFLAG Durham representative Theodore Thomas Dowling, Durham Regional Police Supt. Teresa Hutchinson and Durham Regional Chair John Henry, said a DRPS media release.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil has expanded to include all trans people who have died because of violence and it is now recognized globally.
