No unpaid bills shut-offs, free parking, rides

Whitby: Durham Municipality said it will not enforce late payment charges or shut-offs if residents do not pay water and sewer bills on time.

Oshawa said it will not charge for parking.

“The Region of Durham continues to actively monitor the Covid-19 situation, with the health and safety of residents as the top priority,” it said while issuing the following updates:

  • The Region of Durham has suspended all water and sewer bill late payment charges, collection notifications and water shut-offs for non-payment. The region will also offer enhanced payment flexibility for customers unable to pay their water and sewer bill on time. For more information, call 1-800-465-6611 or email waterbilling@durham.ca.
  • Durham Region Transit (DRT) has announced some service modifications to reflect reduced ridership demands and support social distancing. Notably, customers will board buses using the rear doors only (except those customers with mobility aides, or otherwise requiring use of a ramp); and no fare payment will be required for any customer. More information can be found at DurhamRegionTransit.com.
  • The Whitby Waste Management Centre is closed for bin sales and exchanges. Bins sales and exchanges are available at the Bowmanville Household Special Waste Depot.

Oshawa changes to waste, licensing and downtown parking

In response to the evolving developments related to Covid-19, the City of Oshawa has taken additional measures to support community members and businesses.

Parking in Downtown Oshawa: Supporting our businesses and community members, parking is free at all metered on-street locations and municipal parking lots in downtown Oshawa until Sunday, April 5. Time limits for parking still apply.

Waste Collection: Recognizing that more community members and their families are staying home, which generates more waste, the city has increased the four-bag limit to six bags for garbage collection and waived the requirement for garbage bag tags. At this time, this is in effect until Sunday, April 5. It encourages residents to continue to practice waste reduction by utilizing their blue boxes and green bins.

Licensing – Business, Taxi and Animal: Business, taxi and animal licences due to expire at the end of March have been extended to May 31 to allow individuals and businesses more time to submit and process these applications.

Serving Community: Although our City facilities are temporarily closed to the public, City staff continue to serve the community.

Through a collaborative effort, the region, city, service agencies and the faith community continue to support vulnerable community members. Outreach workers continue to connect with vulnerable and unsheltered individuals to offer connections to services and shelter and provide essential supplies, including hygiene products. Additionally, various social services agencies provide warming stations and centres and offer washroom facilities and meals.

City Updates: The city continues to post daily updates to its dedicated webpage for the latest on closures, meeting cancellations and changes to services, as well as frequently asked questions and resources.

Community members concerned about their health are asked to use the Ontario COVID-19 self-assessment tool to determine if they need to seek care or refer to Lakeridge Health’s COVID-19 Assessment Clinic.
