One new death takes January covid toll to 5

Durham Health yesterday posted a new Covid-19 death for January 3 in Whitby, taking the month’s toll to five. All five deaths were not in long term care homes.

The covid death toll in December stood at 53 and in November at 5.

Durham Health announced 170 new cases for January 7 taking the region’s tally to 8,561 since the count began on February 29. Another 45 cases are under investigation.

Recoveries stand at 7,317, up by 73. There are 999 active covid cases.

There were:

  • 36 new cases in Pickering
  • 53 in Ajax
  • 36 in Whitby
  • 22 in Oshawa
  • 4 in Clarington
  • 2 in Uxbridge
  • 3 in Scugog, and
  • 1 in Brock

Forty-two cases are hospitalized with 14 in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and 957 people in home isolation.

Total death toll is at 245 with 202 in long term care homes (LTCHs).

Durham Health reported the highest number of cases so far at 2,515 in Ajax.

Death Toll: 245

Of the 92 reported deaths in Pickering, 86 were in LTCH
Of the 44 reported deaths in Ajax, 33 were in LTCH
Thirty-six deaths were reported in Whitby, 29 in LTCH
Of the 43 reported deaths in Oshawa, 34 were in LTCH
Eight deaths were reported in Clarington [none in LTCH]
22 deaths were reported in Uxbridge, 20 in LTCH
No deaths have been reported in Scugog
No deaths have been reported in Brock
