Work starts on the tallest building in Oshawa

On Thursday, July 4, the Toronto-based Atria Development launched a luxury rental project at 80 Bond St. E. Oshawa, which at 20-storeys will be the tallest building in the city.

The 370-suite development will sit beside Atria’s first Oshawa rental complex at 100 Bond East, now completed and leased.

The new $125 million project, with retail at ground level, will be located on one of the most central sites in the city, right beside the modern YMCA building, close to restaurants, cultural venues and shopping, as well as steps away from the Tribute Communities Centre, provincial courthouse, Costco and other major retailers.

Designers A&Architects have used similar materials to neighbouring 100 Bond, while incorporating light metal panels on upper levels to harmonize with the provincial courthouse. Ground level retail will complete the streetscape established by Atria’s first project.

The building will also feature an elegant lobby, a first-floor gym and fitness centre and a fifth-floor party room with kitchen, bar lounge and outdoor terrace with BBQ stations. Pet owners will have a convenient dog-wash station.

Occupancy will begin in spring 2021, with rents starting at $1,350 a month. Suites will range from 475-sq.-ft. studios to 1,700-sq.-ft. three bedrooms and penthouse suites. A rental office will open in the building in fall, 2020 or early 2021. Meanwhile, interested future tenants can register on Atria’s website.

Atria Oshawa ground breaking ceremony

“We are seeing a real momentum in demand for good quality accommodation in Oshawa. This city, its mayor, councillors and staff have had great foresight in working to diversify employment and foster sectors like education, high-tech and health care. We want to thank them for their incredible support for developments like ours, which are bringing residents into the downtown,” said Hans Jain, President, Atria Development.

Dan Carter, Mayor of Oshawa said: “Oshawa’s downtown is on the cusp of a population boom, with 6,000 to 8,000 new residents expected to move into the city’s core over the next 10 to 15 years. 80 Bond Street is a cornerstone of that vision and a welcome addition to our downtown skyline. The intensification of our downtown through projects such as 80 Bond continues to make our City’s core one of the most vibrant urban environments east of Toronto.”

Atria entered the Oshawa market in 2003 with Parkwood Residences, the conversion to 120 condos of an empty office building at 44 Bond St. W. The company recognized the city’s potential and, in 2006, acquired the 2.2-acre parcel on Bond St. E., where it began work on the now-renting 239-suite 100 Bond East development in 2015. The company has also completed the 20-suite rental, Central on Emma, in Oshawa.
