Oshawa condoles hockey legend Dale Hawerchuk

The City of Oshawa has extended its condolences to the family of hockey legend Dale Hawerchuk, who passed away yesterday after courageously battling cancer.

Dale Hawerchuk grew up in Oshawa, attending Woodcrest Public School and later Donevan High School. He made his mark on local hockey as a leading member of Oshawa Minor Hockey Association, Oshawa Legionaires and Oshawa Kinsmen teams.

Hawerchuk played two seasons with the Cornwall Royals of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League before his rise to the National Hockey League. During his 16 season professional career, Hawerchuk played for the Winnipeg Jets, Buffalo Sabres, St. Louis Blues and the Philadelphia Flyers. He was the longest-serving Head Coach of the Barrie Colts Junior A team.

Hawerchuk was inducted into the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Earlier this year, City Council approved naming a future park that will be located on a portion of the former Donevan High School site (the new Symphony Towns development) as ‘Dale Hawerchuk Park’.

“On behalf of City Council and the City of Oshawa, it is with heavy hearts that we extend our condolences to the Hawerchuk family. Dale Hawerchuk made a lasting mark on local hockey and will be remembered as a homegrown hero for his dedication on and off the ice,” said Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter.

Flags at City facilities were lowered yesterday and will remain at half-mast until further notice in memory of Oshawa Hall of Fame hockey hero Dale Hawerchuk.
