Oshawa Power issues ‘sophisticated’ scam warning

Oshawa Power has issued a scam alert warning residents to be careful of people claiming to be representatives of the utility company.

“As a precaution to our customers, we wanted to share that some sophisticated scammers are portraying themselves as Oshawa Power collection agents – asking residents to meet and provide payment, under the threat of disconnection,” said an advisory..

“We have been notified of scammers using the Oshawa Power name and likeness to demand money from our customers. The individuals have copied the existing Oshawa Power recorded phone system and have set their call ID to display Oshawa PUC,” it said.

The advisory pointed out that Oshawa Power has no association with this phone number: 1-(855) 797-1224

It said Oshawa Power will never:

  • Threaten immediate disconnection
  • Ask customers to meet us for payment
  • Contact you from a 1-(800) number
  • Accept cash payment

Oshawa Power only accepts payment via secure online banking, secure online credit card, and mailed cheque to the main office.

The only telephone number is (905) 723-4623, said the advisory.

“If you have been contacted by someone demanding immediate payment, hang up and report the call. If you are unsure whether you have been contacted by Oshawa Power, contact our team to determine the authenticity of the phone call,” it said.
