Three new pedestrian crossings coming to Scugog

Scugog said three new pedestrian crossings have been identified in the Township’s Active Transportation Plan.  These will provide improved safety and will help promote active transportation within the urban areas.

All three crossings are nearing completion and will be activated soon.  The pedestrian crossings include:

  • An Intersection Pedestrian Signal (IPS) in the hamlet of Greenbank to provide a safe pedestrian crossing for Highway 7/12 at Cragg Road.  The signal is being installed by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and is funded by the Township of Scugog. This signal will play a key role in connecting the east and west sides of the hamlet of Greenbank
  • A Pedestrian Crossover on Simcoe Street at Paxton Street. The crossing includes ladder crosswalk markings, overhead signage, flashing beacon and advance notice signage and pavement markings. The crossing is being installed by the Region of Durham and the funding is shared between the Region and the Township.
  • A Pedestrian Crossover on Old Simcoe Road at Doctor Archer Drive (just north of Paxton Street).  The crossing includes ladder crosswalk markings, signage, flashing beacon and advance notice signage and pavement markings. The existing Crossing Guard at Old Simcoe Road and Chimney Hill Way/ Bay Street will be relocated to the new Pedestrian Crossover as this location provides a better connection between the Cawkers Creek subdivision and the schools, has better sightlines, aligns better with the pedestrian crossing at Simcoe Street and Paxton Street and it is closer to the new Cawkers Creek park on Sherrington Drive. The crossing is being installed by the Region and is funded by the Township.

The township said Old Simcoe Road/Chimney Hill Way Crossing Guard to move to new pedestrian crossing at Doctor Archer Drive beginning Monday November 14.

It said it has been actively working to improve safety for all road users (vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians, etc.).  An important part of road safety is to provide more pedestrian crossings in high traffic areas.
