Hall of Fame athlete Sandy Hawley is to join members of Oshawa council for the ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of Sandy Hawley Park. The ceremony will take place on Friday, May 13, at 1:30 pm at 2500 Kentucky Derby Way, Oshawa.
Incorporating community engagement feedback, the park pays tribute to the neighbourhood’s rich history and offers a variety of opportunities for active and individual play. The park features a farm-themed playground structure, as well as a garden-inspired splash pad that will open for the season on May 25.
The surrounding park area contains a soccer field, half basketball court and an accessible multi-use path that connects to EP Taylor woodlot and through to Charles PB Taylor Parkette.
Sandy Hawley Park is named in honour of Oshawa native and member of Canada’s Horse Racing Hall of Fame and the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame, Sandy Hawley. Hawley, member of the Order of Canada, was named Canada’s top athlete twice and was also inducted into the United States National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.
