Pickering Museum Village has new learning pods

Pickering Museum Village is adapting to a changing learning environment as students across Durham Region return to class.

Typically, the museum hosts around 10,000 students each year, but this year it is adapting to a new type of educator group – the learning pod, said a city announcement.

Following provincial regulations for Covid-19, this new educational experience at the museum is a safe and fun way to learn local history from real historical buildings and artifacts.

Small group education programs are available, tailored to learning pods of up to nine people. With many families opting for learn from home or virtual learning solutions, the museum is offering a way for students to receive an immersive and educational learning experience at the museum. The Early Settler program is designed for the grade three curriculum, but can be tailored for several elementary grades, depending on the age range of the learning pod, said the announcement.

Students and their families can join a costumed museum interpreter for a 50-minute tour featuring the history of early settlement in Pickering. Featured buildings will include the Log House, the Log Barn, and the Blacksmith Shop.

These tours are not restricted to education and school curriculum; they are a great way for family and adult social bubbles to get out of the house and rediscover the past, the city said.

Sessions are available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and can be booked by calling 905.683.8401 or emailing PMVBookings@pickering.ca.
