Pickering Museum Village is launching a new Field Trip program on April 25, the city has announced.
A Child’s Day features a guided interactive 90 minute tour with a costumed museum interpreter who will encourage children to explore the mysteries of the forest and early indigenous-settler relations, build the first shelter to live in, try chores, and discover life in a log cabin. It’s an updated twist on the museum’s half-day tour program, said a city statement. For teachers wishing to lengthen their stay at the museum, they will be able to customize their students’ experience with a choice of three 90 minute add-on program options.
The Fun on the Farm Independent Discovery program allows teachers and students the opportunity to explore and discover parts of the Museum Village on their own, equipped with a scavenger hunt sheet and a map. This program option includes things to see and do in the museum’s new interactive exhibit in the Combination Barn. In the exhibit, students can try milking a demonstration cow, comb the tail of a demonstration foal, judge fair entries, and grind feed for cattle. They will also complete activities around the Museum Village, including a stop at the General Store.
School Days gives students a chance to step back in time to the early days of old-fashioned school rules and slates. When the school bell rings, they’ll role-play along with their costumed museum interpreter (playing the part of the school teacher) who will lead them through authentic lessons and explain some old-fashioned school rules to them. When the role-play school room activity ends, they’ll learn how children enjoyed recess 200 years ago.
Playful Pursuits explores life 200 years ago for children through play. Students will play with wooden toys (there are no batteries!), and our costumed museum interpreter will teach and lead a variety of parlour and active games. The program will finish up with a game-making activity that the children will take home.
