Practice odd-even lawn watering this summer

The Regional Municipality of Durham is reminding residents using municipal water supply to practice odd-even lawn watering, from now until September, in an effort to conserve water.

Odd-even lawn watering means residents with an odd number home address should only water on odd calendar days, and vice versa—if your home address is even, then water only on even calendar days. Residents can also conserve water by only watering grass when necessary. A healthy lawn requires 2.5 centimetres (or one inch) of water per week, including rainfall, said a municipal media statement.

Under the Regional Water System By-law 89-2003, odd-even lawn watering is mandatory during the summer months. Observing this by-law will help to decrease the amount of water consumed each summer, the release said.

“Water conservation is especially important during the hot summer months. Small changes, like following our odd-even lawn watering practice, can help to make a big difference in terms of conserving our municipal water supply. We should all keep water efficiency in mind when doing our daily activities,” says John Presta, Director of Environmental Services, Region of Durham.
