Oshawa cancels summer programs till August

In an effort to reduce the spread of Covid-19 and for the protection of children and staff, Oshawa has cancelled the summer program session, including Summer Camps and the Outdoor Playground program.

Additionally, all city-led events, sporting events, tournaments and community event permits are cancelled for the month of July, said a city media release.

Community members who enrolled in a summer program will automatically receive a refund in the form of a credit for any program fees paid to their activeOshawa account. Over the coming weeks, city staff will be contacting all program registrants, and individuals on waitlists, to discuss questions relating to program cancellations and refund options, it said.

Permit holders for community events in July will be contacted by the Facility Booking Office with more information regarding special event permit cancellation. Furthermore, facility permits for indoor spaces remain cancelled until further notice, it added.

The City continues to monitor and evaluate facility closures, services and programs to provide updates about any modified program offerings, as information is available. Community members are encouraged to connect and stay active with the City during this time through activeOshawa at Home, the new virtual activities series, at www.oshawa.ca/athome for weekly activities for all ages.

Whitby summer camps, programming cancelled

The Town of Whitby has made the difficult decision to cancel all summer programming, including camps and swim classes. Events have also been cancelled up until the end of the summer, including the September 19, 2020 Harvest Festival.

The decisions were made in consideration of the continued advice of provincial and public health officials that the practice of physical distancing must continue to help keep people safe and slow the spread of Covid-19.

Summer Camps and Recreation Programming

All Town of Whitby, Community Connection, and Station Gallery summer day camps, as well as the recreation programs and activities found in the 2020 Spring/Summer Activity Guide, have been cancelled. This includes swimming lessons, general interest programming, 55+ programs and the Junior Fire Camp offered by Whitby Fire and Emergency Services.

The Town is issuing full refunds for all payments received to date. Refunds will be issued to each partcipant’s Active account and can be used toward future programs, a membership, or activity payment. Participant’s can request a refund to their original credit card or by cheque by emailing their full name and mailing address to parks.rec@whitby.ca. Please note that refunds may take up to four weeks to process due to volume.

The Town continues to monitor the situation. As restrictions from the Province and Public Health are lifted, the Town will explore modified day camp and recreation program opportunities, where possible, in accordance with all guidelines and health and safety protocols.

Summer Events

Understanding that summer festivals and events require long lead times for planning, rely on Town sites, supports or permissions, and present higher public health risks given limits to physical distancing, the Town of Whitby is extending the cancellation of its events, town-supported events, and third-party permits to the end of the summer, up to and including the Harvest Festival on September 19, 2020.

The Town continues to explore opportunities to offer events and programming virtually or through alternate means that support physical distancing. The Town will be contacting all event organizers to advise them of the extended cancellation and will work with them to determine next steps.

Outdoor Amenities

Permitting for outdoor sports fields and picnic shelters, including barbeque permits, is also cancelled at this time.

A number of outdoor amenities are open for public use, including off-leash dog parks, beaches, sports fields, and benches.

When outdoors, residents are reminded to do their part to stay apart by maintaining a distance of at least two metres (or six feet) between themselves and any person living outside of their household.

“With the continued advice from public health officials regarding physical distancing, it’s become clear that we cannot continue our summer programming as planned. We recognize the impact this decision will likely have on families and kids who look forward to our camps and events each year. We look forward to welcoming the community back to our facilities and programming when it is safe to do so,” said Matt Gaskell, CAO, Town of Whitby.
