The Queen Street Pedestrian Pilot in Scugog will not continue at this time. The reason: Due to the numbers staying relatively low for Scugog and Durham Region, and a review of the business survey.
This weekend, August 22 and 23, Queen Street will be open to vehicular traffic. Additional accessible parking spaces temporarily added for the closure will be removed. The portable washrooms will remain on Perry Street for the time being. Portable washrooms are also available near the marina and Palmer Park, said a statement
The Scugog Emergency Control Group with the support of Council and the BIA, had implemented a pedestrian zone along Queen Street to provide an open area during Covid-19 to enhance physical distancing.
The intention of the closure of Queen Street from Perry to Water Street and the sidewalk extensions east of John Street, was to provide an additional outdoor amenity for residents and businesses to use as the province moved into Stage 3 of reopening Ontario.
Mayor Drew thanked all involved for their support, “Thank you to the residents for their patience and due diligence throughout this long road of Covid-19. I am so very proud of our Emergency Control Team and all the staff who worked throughout this pandemic to serve our community. This initiative was one of many innovative ideas that were implemented to address the priority of health and safety of our residents. Thank you to the BIA for their efforts to collaborate during an already difficult time for businesses. The road to recovery is challenging and working together is key.”
Public safety remains Scugog’s number one priority at this time and Mayor Drew further reminded residents to continue to follow the guidelines and orders from the provincial and regional health officials when visiting and supporting local businesses. “Please stay diligent with your daily efforts. When you go out to shop, remember to maintain your physical distance, wear your mask when going inside a public or commercial space, carry and use hand sanitizer regularly.”
