Record 178 covid cases, December toll at 53

Durham Health yesterday posted a new record 178 Covid-19 cases for January 2 bringing the region’s tally to 7,791 since the count began on February 29. Another 61 cases are under investigation.

One new non-LTCH Covid-19 death in Pickering has been added for December 29, taking the month’s final toll to 53. November saw five deaths.

Recoveries stand at 6,558, up by 60. There are 992 active covid cases.

There were:

  • 24 new cases in Pickering
  • 42 in Ajax
  • 20 in Whitby
  • 19 in Oshawa
  • 7 in Clarington
  • 6 in Scugog, and
  • One in Brock

Forty-four cases are hospitalized with 12 in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and 948 people in home isolation.

Total death toll is at 241 with 202 in long term care homes (LTCHs).

Durham Health reported the highest number of cases so far at 2,277 in Ajax.

Of the 92 reported deaths in Pickering, 86 were in LTCH
Of the 43 reported deaths in Ajax, 33 were in LTCH
Thirty-four deaths were reported in Whitby, 29 in LTCH
Of the 43 reported deaths in Oshawa, 34 were in LTCH
Eight deaths were reported in Clarington [none in LTCH]
21 deaths were reported in Uxbridge, 20 in LTCH
No deaths have been reported in Scugog
No deaths have been reported in Brock
