Remembrance Day parades in Durham on November 11

Oshawa: The Remembrance Day Parade and Ceremony will take place on November 11 from 10:25 am until 12 pm in Memorial Park in Oshawa.

According to Downtown Oshawa BIA, preparations began on October 25 with legion banners starting to go up in Downtown Oshawa and will culminate with the Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11.

Since 2017, the Veteran Banner Program has been a way that the Legion, the City of Oshawa, and Downtown Oshawa have been honouring and remembering those who have served our country for our freedom, said a BIA statement.

This program provides the opportunity for people to honour their family members who are veterans by purchasing Remembrance Day banners to be hung around Downtown Oshawa. These banners include the name and photograph of the veteran and their service, it added.

“Lest We Forget” The Veteran Banner Program is a great addition to the way Oshawa honours those who secured our freedom. In addition to banners Oshawa has a Veterans Street naming program and provides free parking to those with Veterans plates. We have not forgotten,” said Regional Councillor, Colonel (Retired) Bob Chapman.

Whitby Honouring Our Veterans

The Town of Whitby will support its two local Legions – Brooklin Legion Branch 152 and Whitby Legion Branch 112 – and pay tribute to veterans and active service members.

Once again, eighty-one banners, each featuring the photo, name and service era of a local veteran or active service member, have been hung on lampposts throughout Downtown Whitby and Downtown Brooklin.

New this year is that many of these banners have been made interactive. An app, funded in partnership by the Town’s Mayor’s Community Development Fund and the Whitby and Brooklin Legion Branches, provides visitors with the ability to scan each banner to hear veterans’ stories on their smartphone or computer. Both the app and an interactive map showing banner locations are available online.

The banners will remain up until November 12 in honour of Whitby’s men and women who have served their country. The banners were developed through a partnership between the Town, the Brooklin and Whitby Legion Branches, and local graphic designer, Emma Inkpen.

Free Parking for Veterans: In addition to the banners, the town is also proud to honour its’ veterans throughout the year by offering free parking in all on-street metered parking spaces and in municipal paid parking lots. Under the town’s by-law, operators of a vehicle displaying an Ontario veteran licence plate can park for free during the permitted time limit of the parking meter or municipal lot.

Remembrance Day Ceremonies: On Monday, November 11, the Whitby Legion’s Annual Remembrance Day Parade will begin at the Branch (117 Byron Street South) at approximately 10:30 a.m sharp – with the Canadian Forces completing a flypast during the event. The parade will travel north on Byron Street to Dundas Street, east on Dundas Street, and arrive at Cenotaph Park (111 Dundas Street East). The ceremony at Cenotaph Park will begin at 11 a.m.

The Brooklin Legion invites residents to the memorial ceremony on Remembrance Day at the new Brooklin Cenotaph at the Brooklin Community Centre and Library (8 Vipond Road). The ceremony starts at 12:45 p.m. at the Brooklin Legion (56 Baldwin Street) and finishes at the Brooklin Cenotaph.

Residents are also welcome to attend a Remembrance Day Ceremony taking place at the Whitby Seniors Activity Centre (801 Brock St S.) on November 11 at 10:30 a.m.

Poppies: The poppy serves as a symbol of remembrance. Each year, local Legions run a Poppy Campaign to raise funds that provide immediate assistance to former servicemen and women in need, including food, shelter or medical attention for them or their families. Poppies are available at local establishments, including Town facilities, throughout Whitby for a donation.
