RIDE evaders crash car, two cruisers before being found hiding

Durham police said two males are facing charges after fleeing a RIDE line in Oshawa.

On Monday, January 12 around 11pm, members of Central East Division were conducting a RIDE initiative in the area of Stevenson Road and Gibb Street. A driver was instructed by officers to pull off the roadway after they showed signs of impairment. The driver then fled from the line at a high rate of speed.

A short distance away, the suspect vehicle struck another motorist but continued fleeing at a high rate of speed. When officers attempted to contain the vehicle, it intentionally struck two police cruisers before continuing to evade police. The vehicle was then operated in a dangerous manner for several more blocks until the driver and passenger abandoned it and fled on foot, police said.

Officers, with the assistance of the K9 Unit and the Remote Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS), tracked the suspects on foot and located them a short distance away hiding in a residential backyard, where they were taken into custody.

The 29-year old male suspect from Oshawa was held for a bail hearing. A 32-year old male suspect also from Oshawa was released on an undertaking. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.

Anyone with cellphone, dash cam, surveillance footage or information about this incident is asked to contact Cst. Dominie of Central East Division at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1701.
