A permit to take water was submitted to Scugog Council by Parkbridge Cottage & RV Resort.
In response, the council has stated that they are “committed to voicing our residents’ concerns regarding the application.”
The address of the site for the take water permit is at 225 Platten Boulevard in Scugog.
This proposal is for a new permit to take water from four wells for Scugog Landing RV Resort water supply purposes.
The proposed water taking qualifies as a Category 3 permit which is defined as a water takings are anticipated to have the highest potential of causing unacceptable environmental impactor interference.
Background
On June 4, the mayor and township staff attended a public meeting with concerned residents to discuss ongoing well water issues on Scugog Island. At that meeting, it was noted that the Province of Ontario has jurisdiction for all matters involving well water in Scugog. This includes the issuance of orders and the review of applications. The Township has no legal ability to directly address well water issues.
In July, staff from the township and the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) conducted a joint compliance inspection on the Parkbridge site. While the township’s main focus of this inspection was municipal issues, MECP staff took the opportunity to look into the wells on the property. In addition, following the June 4 public meeting, the mayor and chief administrative officer met with MECP Minister Todd McCarthy to discuss issues residents have been facing with well water on the island, and requested further MECP investigation.
Scugog intends to formally submit its concerns regarding the permit to take water to the MECP.
Residents are able and encouraged to submit their feedback. The original deadline for commenting was Friday, August 21, at 11:59 pm but has been extended by the Province for a further 30 days.
